You have to go to the tape to know what Palin really said

Here is a reporter for the Washington Post who is trying to start a new line of attack on Governor Sarah Palin:

Palin Links Iraq to Sept. 11 In Talk to Troops in Alaska

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska, Sept. 11 -- Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would "defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans."

The idea that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a view once promoted by Bush administration officials, has since been rejected even by the president himself. But it is widely agreed that militants allied with al-Qaeda have taken root in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion.

Well, yes, "it is widely agreed" that Al-Qaeda terrorists have been killing innocent people in Iraq for years -- and that one of the tasks of the coalition forces is to protect the people of Iraq from those terrorists, just as Gov. Palin said.

So, how did Ms. Kornblut come up with her fantastic idea that Gov. Palin has claimed that Saddam Hussein's regime helped Al-Qaeda attack us on September 11, 2001?

Probably the same place she found the idea that this was "a view once promoted by Bush administration officials."

Does she have to stand up when she pulls these ideas out? Or is she such a natural liar that she can remain seated at the keyboard the whole time?

Update, September 12: Instapundit links to Tom Maguire, who links to William Kristol, who shows that Kornblut's lie was even worse in the original version. Kristol's headline asks if it is "stupid or malicious." It's both, but that's not unusual for the Democrats and their party organ known as "the MSM." They are stupid and malicious most of the time when attacking their political opposition.
